Alleged Drunken Driver Takes Out Sign

Betty Lucero, 34, is accused of driving drunk in a crash that downed a sign and destroyed some plants in a median on Fred Waring Drive in Indian Wells near Palm Desert.

An Indio woman was arrested early Friday on suspicion of driving drunk in a crash that wiped out a raised median in Indian Wells.

Betty Lucero, 34, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol when she rammed her 2008 Dodge Magnum sedan into the median on Fred Waring Drive at Elkhorn Trail in Indian Wells at 2:50 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, according to Sgt. Dan Devinny of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The Dodge continued eastbound in the median, coming to rest in the westbound lanes of Fred Waring Drive, downing a sign, scattering some boulders and destroying several plants, Devinny said.

Lucero, who was the only occupant in the car, was no injured, he said.

Two eastbound lanes and all three westbound lanes were closed for about one hour, according to Devinny.

Lucero was freed this morning on $2,500 bail from the Indio Jail, according to jail records.

Probably trying to text another drunk. I will be seeing her in meetings pretty soon. Maybe she'll learn from this mistake. Lucky no one was hurt. Wonder what Bar was she leaving at 2:50am.

Ms Lucero has nothing to fear. One of our Riverside County judges will make sure she's back out in our community where maybe this time she'll kill someone or better yet an kill an entire family. Then we can all be sad. End of story.

Ron...she will probably lose her license for 6 months...that's a DMV action. Superior Court can sentence her to time, community service, house arrest...any or all...

Please excuse my original sarcastic letter but it angers me that I read too many stories of drunk drivers with previous DUI convictions allowed to return to our streets and ultimately causing a traffic accident resulting in death(s) and usually not the drunk driver. I do not know if Ms Lucero has prior convictions but even if it's her first offense the penalty should result in her privledge to drive. No second chances to kill.
