Bono Mack Speaks Out Against Raising Debt Ceiling

Republicans have urged the Obama administration draft an alternative plan in case budget talks fall through.

Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs, plans to vote against legislation to raise the national debt ceiling, her office announced today.

"It's time for the federal government to cut up its credit cards,'' Bono Mack said in a statement. "We can no longer afford to keep borrowing money for programs – no matter how well intentioned – when our national debt is growing by a staggering $4 billion a day."

The national debt is approaching $15 trillion. The congresswoman believes it is "wrong" to keep spending at current rates.

"We owe it to our children and grandchildren,'' she said. "The best way to get the economy moving forward is to put the brakes on out-of-control government spending.”

The Obama administration has argued that lawmakers have no other choice than to raise the $14.3 trillion cap.
