Burrtec Spurs Restaurant Composting

A valley wide effort to reduce landfill trash reaches out towards restaurants, benefits agricultural industry.

If you are a Palm Desert restaurant owner, Burrtec Waste Management would like to pick up food waste from you.

As part of overall efforts for our valley to be more "green" and "sustainable" in its practices, Burrtec has jumped on board to offer ways for restaurants to get rid of waste while contributing to the community's composting needs.

So far over 30 restaurants are participating with Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage leading the way.

The food waste is taken to Burrtec's Coachella facilities where it is turned into mulch and available to the agricultural community as soil; to others as biomass wood fuel; and still others as an alternative ground cover.

The waste is picked up daily and only requires that restaurants designate a daily pick up and use a special 64 gallon plastic container from Burrtec to collect food scraps in.

It's nice to see a valley wide organization pick up the ball to join the area's efforts in becoming a leader in energy efficiency and recycling, taking great cues from the many private individuals like Tea With Iris' Leslie Kelly Shockley who are doing the .
