No Cussing Club Extends Reach

Ninety students have signed a petition stating that they want to start up the club this year.

's "No Cussing Club" is already reaching beyond the campus.

The Palm Desert City Council declared Thursday as a cuss-free day and the first week of March each year as a cuss-free week in the city.

Mayor Pro Tem Bob Spiegel presented the declaration to Ossil V. Macavinta, a PDHS teacher who is a co-adviser for the club.

"It is our hope that this entire Coachella Valley will be a cuss-free valley. That will be a wonderful place,'' Macavinta said.

Ninety students signed a pledge in June to start a club at their high school, and they plan to have a meeting soon, Macavinta said.

"We are a new club," he said. "We are yet a seed being planted."

The club is the only one in the Coachella Valley.

Palm Desert Mayor Jean Benson told The Desert Sun she loves the idea.

“This country is really getting bad if we have to have a cuss-free day, but certainly if it teaches the young people something, it's worthwhile,” Benson told the newspaper.
