FORUM: How Do You Fight Cancer?

Relay For Life will hold an event in Palm Desert this weekend.

This weekend, will host the Relay For Life, which is a 24 hour walk to raise awareness about cancer.

The festivities will include an opening ceremony, a survivors lap, and a luminara. If you've never participated in this function, I highly recommend it. It is so emotional, you can't help but to feel the power of it all.

Generally, when people think of cancer, they think of adults fighting that disease. It very rarely gets thought of as children fighting that battle. Why? Because children are supposed to be young, healthy, and care free. They shouldn't have to carry the burden of fighting for their lives. And their parents shouldn't have to live in fear of out living their children.

My 12 year old niece, Mikayla, just won her battle this year. Now I don't know how religious or spiritual you all are, and I honestly hope I do not offend anyone with this, but by the grace of God, Mikayla will be able to see her 13th birthday. She had such a rare form of Leukemia, they had to give her very aggressive chemo treatments.

She is my inspiration and hero. That is why I created a team for the Relay For Life in her honor. The team is called "Mikayla's Little Monsters." Join us!

Have you ever had to deal with childhood cancer? Have your children had any friends or relatives that have been affected by cancer, and how do they react to the initial news of it all? Most importantly, how are you taking a stand against this disease? Are you changing your diet or contributing to a cause?
