City Hosting Free Family Safety Festival in Palm Desert

Family members of all ages are invited to the free event at Palm Desert Civic Center Park this Saturday, March 23.

The city of Palm Desert is again hosting its annual family safety festival this weekend, which will feature several free activities and information on things like earthquake and fire safety.

The event runs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Civic Center Park on Saturday, March 23, and will offer up plenty of things for children— including the opportunity to meet McGruff the Crime Dog and Recycle Binney, Palm Desert’s recycling mascot.

  • Earthquake and fire safety tips
  • Bicycle and skateboard safety
  • Dog bite prevention
  • Internet safety for children
  • Swimming safety
  • Car Seat checks

"Children are encouraged to bring their bikes for a fun bicycle rodeo, which will give participants an opportunity to learn, practice, and demonstrate safe bicycle handling skills in a fun, noncompetitive atmosphere," Palm Desert City Spokesman David Hermann said, adding that Palm Desert residents can get a free bike helmet. 

Both police and fire representatives will also be on hand to "answer questions, demonstrate equipment, and hand out free literature and giveaways," Hermann said.

Some refreshments including hot dogs and frozen lemonade will be available for purchase.
