Community Corner

Cure for Summertime Blues

Desert Recreation District delivers something for everyone during our long, hot, school-break season.

It's that time of year when all through the town, parents are sighing over the fact that summer is right around the corner. The question of what to do with our children -- when school is out and temperatures rise -- is an annual concern.

One of our local resources, the Desert Recreation District, is a good place to start looking for those invaluable time fillers.

The Desert Recreation District works with the city's community centers to publish a catalog combining all the activities going on this summer all across the valley. There are a number of activities that range all over the place in price range and age group.

I took a salsa class at the Palm Desert Community Center one year and had the time of my life. I am pretty amazed at the variety of things offered and the flexible schedules.

For kids this summer, there are basketball camps, summer camps, karate classes, golf, tennis, painting, music and dance. Kids can even become members of the gym at the community center for a low annual fee and go hang out during the day to work out. There's even a summer baseball league.
