Free Ice Cream for Donors at Blood Drive Challenge

The Palm Desert blood drive is part of a challenge for Desert Blood Services. Two others are scheduled at nearby towns later this week.

Donors can get a coupon for a free pint of Baskin-Robbins ice cream at a Palm Desert blood drive Tuesday.

The blood collection is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Milan Institute, 75030 Gerald Ford Drive.

Two other blood drives, both part of Desert Blood Services' Nine Cities Blood Drive Challenge, are also planned this week.

The schedule is:

  • Wednesday, 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Embassy Suites, 50777 Santa Rosa Plaza, La Quinta; and
  • Thursday, noon to 6 p.m. at the Palm Springs Police Department, 200 S. Civic Drive.

The Blood Drive Challenge was started to highlight the need for blood donations in the summer. Palm Desert, which held its drive on Saturday, is the current leader, Desert Blood Services spokesman Don Escalante said. The challenge ends Aug. 1.

Healthy people at least 15 years old can give blood, but those 15 and 16 years old must provide written parental consent. Photo identification is required, and all donors should eat and be well-hydrated before arriving, according to Desert Blood Services.
