A gas leak forced the closure of part of a major Coachella Valley thoroughfare in Palm Desert Monday, but no injuries or evacuations were reported.
The leak was reported around 11 a.m. on Highway 111 between Painter's Path and Fred Waring Drive. Roofing fell and landed on an above-ground gas meter while construction work was being done in the area, Southern California Gas Co. spokeswoman Anne Silva said.
Gas Co. crews got the leak under control before 1 p.m., and there was no interruption in gas service, she said.
Eastbound lanes on Highway 111 were closed until around 1 p.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
