Who Is the Palm Desert Person of the Year?

TIME magazine named President Barack Obama their person of the year. Tell us who you think should win from Palm Desert!

On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Barack Obama as their Person of the Year.

“For finding and forging a new majority, for turning weakness into opportunity and for seeking, amid great adversity, to create a more perfect union, Barack Obama is TIME's 2012 Person of the Year,” Time managing editor Richard Stengel explained in his note to readers.

The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including Obama, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Palm Desert’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse?”

Tell us your pick in the comment section below!

Living in a community filled with people of great giving qualities is an honor. My pick for the Palm Desert Person of the Year is Mika Moulton of Christopher’s Clubhouse, Palm Desert, CA. After losing her young son, Christopher this remarkable woman started a foundation named in behalf of her son who was brutally killed by a repeat offender. Christopher’s Clubhouse is a comprehensive community safety education & empowerment organization. We are dedicated to providing an educational program to empower children and families with the skills to avoid exploitation. Spreading the light of hope that all children and families can be safe from predatory crimes. You may learn more about Mika, Christopher and Christopher’s Clubhouse at: http://www.christophersclubhouse.org/

Barack Obama. Not that he is so good; just that he saved us from the horror of a Romney/Ryan administration.

Kimberly Drew Safoyan should be honored as Palm Desert Person of the Year. She has volunteered her time on the Palm Desert High School PTO for many years. Also, she has a played a key role in promoting play production for the youth in Palm Desert and at the McCallum Theatre. I live down the street from her and she is always doing something positive for our community and the surrounding area's. Every year she collects food items , clothes, and household items from our neighborhood with a Salvation Army truck for most of the day. She rings a bell for the Salvation Army every year at stores to collect money for needy, often for entire week. Everytime , I see her she is doing a act of kindness. I know she does so much more, but is modest . Please keep her in mind for person of the year.

Dr. Raul Ruiz, elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, should receive this honor.

Dr. Joyce Wade Maltais, who just passed away this past Thanksgiving. She dedicated her life to teaching and serving the people of the Coachella Valley.

I don't agree nominating Raul Ruiz;he mentored some children seeking medicine as a career ,grew up poor , and went to college, and assisted sometimes for east valley. His practice is in La Quinta...not back in the east side of the valley. He is not a long time resident of Palm Desert, and it should be someone that has done alot in our city .

Just because he was elected to office doesn't mean he should be the person of the year. If he actually helps in cleaning up the Salton Sea, brings more good paying jobs to the valley, and enforces our immigration laws. Then I will be the first one to agree with you. Politicians have made promises for years...let's see if he is different!

If for no other reason, Dr. Ruiz deserves to receive the honor because he sent Bono-Mack back to her home in Florida.
