City To Honor Student Artists

Palm Desert will celebrate the talents of its youth in at Civic Center Park.

Tonight at the , a celebration will be held to announce the winners of this year’s Student Art and Essay Contest.

The activities are set to commence at the Amphitheater on the lawn at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the City’s Public Arts Coordinator Deborah Schwartz: “This annual contest was created in 1985 by the, then Civic Arts Committee, to promote a sense of pride in Palm Desert in the city’s students.”

“Each year a letter is sent to the principals of all Palm Desert schools, both public and private, inviting grades kindergarten through 12 to participate,” she said. “The top three individual artworks, class murals, and essays from each grade in each school are then brought to the Palm Desert Community Gallery for display.”

This year’s theme, chosen by the Arts in Public Places Commission in conjunction with the City’s landscape department, was “Trees: Roots For Life.”

Winners will receive an award and their photo will be taken with Palm Desert Mayor Jean Benson. They will also receive savings bonds, cash awards and ribbons.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it tomorrow night. The City of Palm Desert will showcase the work in its community gallery located in the North Wing of City Hall afterwards. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the public is invited to stop by.
