Friends of Kent McGarity Jazz Trombonist Present a Jazz Tribute Concert

On Friday, June 24th, members of the Mirage Jazz Tentet, led by Trombonist John Leys and Trumpeter Stan Watkins of The Desert Cities Jazz Band and the Ted Herman Big Band will pay tribute to the late Kent McGarity, a well-known and popular jazz trombonist. The concert starts at 7pm at Pete Carlson’s Golf & Tennis located at 73-741 Highway 111 in Palm Desert. For more information call 760-568-3263.

Kent passed away on June 3 after a brief illness. All donations benefit Kent’s long-time companion, Katherine Walker.

Kent was a jazz trombonist and member of The Desert Cities Jazz Band, the Mirage Jazz Tentet as well as the Ted Herman Jazz Orchestra. Kent’s jazz affiliations were numerous.  His credits included playing with Woody Herman, Artie Shaw, Stan Steward, John Pizarelli, Sherrie Manicle, Al Hamme, Peter Appleyard, Jerry Lewis and locally with Pat Rizzo, Steve Madaio, Bob O’Connor, Barry Minniefield, and Patrick MaCaffrey. Kent premiered his own composition with the Marshall Hawkins Seahawk Orchestra at the Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines Festival.
