La Boheme at the McCallum Theatre

The McCallum Theatre presents Teatro Lirico d’Europa in a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece La Boheme, an opera of exquisite beauty about love and heart-wrenching tragedy.

La Bohème, often called “the world’s most popular opera,”follows the story of four young free spirits living in an attic apartment in 19th Century Paris – Rodolfo, a poet; Marcello, a painter; Schaunard, a musician; and Colline, aphilosopher. They long for a deeper connection to society, to one another, and in the case of thepoet Rodolfo, to the beautiful but frail seamstress, Mimi. Rodolfo and Mimi’s tragic love affair becomes the emotional center, deepening the loves, ambitions and friendships of the entire group. Over the next year, Rodolfo, Mimi and their circle of friends experience love, longing, jealousy and, ultimately, heartbreaking loss.

Teatro Lirico d’Europa, the European opera touring company formed in 1988 by Giorgio Lalov, a former Bulgarian opera singer, has completed more than 4,000 performances worldwide and 11 consecutive U.S. tours. In addition to its U.S. performances, Teatro Lirico performs in Europe throughout France and Spain, in South American and the Island of Martinique. In the summer of 2011, the company presented a co-production of Verdi’s Rigoletto with Opera Siam in Thailand.
