Open Call Contest Finals Start Tonight at McCalllum

The highly popular talent competition hits the finals weekend; audience has a vote in judging.

The McCallum Theatre will hold its 14th annual Open Call Talent Competition starting tonight.

The three-day competition is organized by the McCallum Theatre
Institute, the education division of the McCallum Theatre. Local vocalists,
dancers and musicians will perform tonight, tomorrow and twice on Saturday.

This year's competition will feature about 90 performers, in 22 acts,
who were picked through auditions from among 181 entrants. Profiles of the
performers are posted on the theater's website.

At each one of the first three shows, the audience votes for their
favorites, and the combined audience vote carries the weight of one judge in
Saturday night's final performance, where the winners will be announced. The
final performance Sunday night will be judged and cash prizes will be awarded
to an audience favorite, second place and grand prize winner. The grand prize
winner will receive $2,500.

Ventriloquist Rob Watkins, the 2011 grand prize winner, will host the
competition. The event, which usually sells out, has become an audience
favorite, theater spokeswoman Cate Ervin said.

``We are excited to work with a large number of new artists this year as
well as welcome back people we've had the privilege to present before,'' said
Kajsa Thuresson-Frary, producer of the event.

All four performances are open to the public. For the 7 p.m.
performances today and tomorrow and the 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, tickets are $10, $15, $20 and $30, or $7 for children under 12.

For the final performance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, tickets are $15, $25, $40 and $50.

Tickets can be purchased at the theater box office, 73000 Fred Waring
Drive, by calling (760) 340-2767 or at www.mccallumtheatre.com.

You';re welcome, Renee but I don't really expect thanks for my contributions to the classroom. IRead More wasn't going to stand by and see kids not have the basic things they needed to get through the class and most teachers are of the same mind :) Sadly, school budgets have never covered all the needs in classrooms.

Dorothy you actually believe criminals can't get guns without a background check. Wow are youRead More naive. Just because YOU don't understand why some people want a particular weapon...does not mean you can impose your ownership standards on someone else. Suppose I suggest you don't need the particular car you drive or the particlar beverage you drink? I see you are opposed to hunting. How do you feel about abortion? Typical liberal double standard at play here??

Totally agree. This is just the beginning of a gun grab. All it will accomplish is furtherRead More restrictions on law abiding citizens. Chicago is a perfect example. Strictest gun control in the nation and highest gun crime and murder rate. Criminals do not comply with the law. Only legal citizens will lose their rights to own the weapon of their choice. Liberals are all about choice when it comes to killing an unborn, but when it comes to a lawful gunowner's choice it's a different story altogether.
