Palm Desert's History Celebrated Through Art at Local Exhibit

Ron Backer, a former NASA employee who worked on the Apollo Space Program, absorbs old photos, newspaper articles, books and legends and weaves them into his “story paintings."

The following was submitted by the Historical Society of Palm Desert:

In a perfect pairing of artist and venue, Ron Backer’s historical paintings of Palm Desert will be on display November 29-December 2nd, 2012, at the historic Shadow Mountain Resort and Club in Palm Desert.

A celebrated historical artist from South Dakota (where he was once named Hall of Fame Artist of the Year) Backer has now turned his talent to depicting narratives of early Palm Desert, including scenes of the Shadow Mountain Club itself.

The Club, popular with fans of mid-Century modernism, opened in 1948 and was one of the first structures in the then-dusty village. This exhibit provides a rare opportunity for the public to visit the historic celebrity hang-out and dip a toe in the famous circle-eight swimming pool.

Ron Backer, a former NASA employee who worked on the Apollo Space Program, is one of the most original artists working in the Coachella Valley today. In his one-of-a-kind narrative approach, he absorbs old photos, newspaper articles, books and legends and weaves them into his “story paintings”.

You';re welcome, Renee but I don't really expect thanks for my contributions to the classroom. IRead More wasn't going to stand by and see kids not have the basic things they needed to get through the class and most teachers are of the same mind :) Sadly, school budgets have never covered all the needs in classrooms.
