Tickets will go on sale this morning for the inaugural "S.S. Coachella'' cruises in December.
The cruises were announced Tuesday by Los Angeles-based promoter
Goldenvoice, organizer of the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals in
the Bahamas and Dec. 19-23 to Jamaica. Headliners include Pulp and Hot Chip,
and lineups are the same for each cruise.
Goldenvoice called the cruises "a rare opportunity to see Coachella artists in an intimate setting.'' The cruises will also include other activities and "surprises,'' according to Goldenvoice.
Other performers will include Yeasayer, Girl Talk, Sleigh Bells, James Murphy and Warpaint.
Both cruises will depart from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and the ship has 12
dining areas, nine bars and several live music settings, according to
Goldenvoice. Staterooms range from $500 to $1,500 per person.
In the cover story for The New York Times' March 30 travel section,
Billboard magazine editor Joe Levy called music cruises "both profitable and
proliferating.'' Artists including Weezer, R. Kelly, Blake Shelton, Kid Rock
and Kiss have performed on the high seas, and promoters also organize cruises
by genre, according to Levy.
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which was held over two
weekends in April for the second straight year, brought in more than $47
million and more than 158,000 people. Coachella and country music festival
Stagecoach ranked No. 1 and 2 on Billboard's Boxscore chart, which lists
concerts held around the world since late last year.
Early general admission and VIP passes for the 2013 Coachella festival sold
out in May, the same day they went on sale. Next year's festival is scheduled
for April 12-14 and April 19-21.
