Trivial Pursuits

Should all time spent be productive?

I was thinking the other day of all the time I've probably wasted in my lifetime doing or watching silly or trivial things. I mean, in the 1960's I actually went to a  rock concert given by "The 1910 Fruit Gum Company". How trivial is that? For starters, you've probably never heard of them! They were the opening act for another, more popular "wanna-be" Beatles-like English group called "Herman's Hermits". In retrospect that was pretty much two hours wasted. But of course, I didn't think so at the time. Age alters our tastes and priorities, doesn't it?

Another trivial pursuit that has done nothing at all to advance my intellect or goals is watching cartoons. I have a weakness for the old Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry cartoons.  (among others)Back in the day, the more violent the cartoon, the funnier and better. That's not the way cartoons are generally evaluated or measured today but in my defense, I am the most passive person I know. So cartoons haven't had a negative effect on my life except to waste time I could have spent in more lofty pursuits like trying to cure a pesky disease or looking for lost socks in my dryer. Oh well.

I think we all need moments or even days when we give our trivial pursuits priority. I think it helps us even out the stress and craziness in life...like taxes, elections and teens wearing pants that shows their underwear. A little diversion isn't so bad now and then.  I'd elaborate, but I have to go watch "Family Guy".

You';re welcome, Renee but I don't really expect thanks for my contributions to the classroom. IRead More wasn't going to stand by and see kids not have the basic things they needed to get through the class and most teachers are of the same mind :) Sadly, school budgets have never covered all the needs in classrooms.

Dorothy you actually believe criminals can't get guns without a background check. Wow are youRead More naive. Just because YOU don't understand why some people want a particular weapon...does not mean you can impose your ownership standards on someone else. Suppose I suggest you don't need the particular car you drive or the particlar beverage you drink? I see you are opposed to hunting. How do you feel about abortion? Typical liberal double standard at play here??

Totally agree. This is just the beginning of a gun grab. All it will accomplish is furtherRead More restrictions on law abiding citizens. Chicago is a perfect example. Strictest gun control in the nation and highest gun crime and murder rate. Criminals do not comply with the law. Only legal citizens will lose their rights to own the weapon of their choice. Liberals are all about choice when it comes to killing an unborn, but when it comes to a lawful gunowner's choice it's a different story altogether.
