Keedy’s Fountain Grill serves up comfort food

The restaurant offers diner charm to locals and visitors on the hunt for simple, cheap, nostalgia and mom's kitchen-style food.

The desert’s most beloved greasy spoon is located just off a frontage road on Highway 111 in Palm Desert.

I have been going there since high school with just about every other long-term resident of Palm Desert.

You can find the perfect breakfast-time, hangover-curing egg scrambles and omelets, always fast and cheap and ready to soak up the long night before.

It is also a place where local specialities like date shakes are enjoyed alongside chocolate chip pancakes and the chicken fried steak. The hash browns are infamous, served flat, plentiful on the plate, perfectly crisped on the outside and soft in the middle and dense with butter.

Keedy’s is definitely not the place to bring your diet. But it is the place to bring your appetite and sip a thick milkshake made with real strawberries.

While there, you can pursue all the memorabilia hanging on the walls like wallpaper including many 1950s and 1960s icons that called the valley home and frequented the joint.

Formica tables, vintage bar stools, newspapers communally shared amongst the tables and constantly refilled mugs of coffee add to the charm of the place cherished by teenagers and senior citizens alike.

Avoid the place during big valley weekends like Coachella and when the swarms come in from 9 a.m. to noon.
