VIDEO: Palm Desert Woman Reaches All Ages With Children's Book

Ruthie Darling's "A Hole Story" is available at the Borders at the River in Rancho Mirage as well as three local resorts.

Ruthie Darling’s passion for volunteering to read her stories at the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert mirrors her lifelong commitment to educating children.

Darling, a 10-year Palm Desert resident who used to work as a teacher in Chicago, released “The Hole Story” late last year.

“It gets children to looking and paying attention to what is around them. It makes them aware of their surroundings,’’ Darling said.

The book, which is meant for children aged 2 to 7, shows how holes appear in everyday life, including sweaters, doughnuts and buttons.

The story also explains how some things work, like a sprinkling can that helps plants grow.

“It has to pertain to an every day world of a child,’’ she said. (Watch Darling read the book by clicking on the video above.)

But it’s not just children who have fallen in love with the book. Her fans include a semi-retired dermatologist in Edmonton, Canada.

Darling’s goal is to inspire children to learn.

“I love putting smiles on children faces,’’ she said. “Developing a love for reading is very important. It opens up another world for children.”

The book has been received well locally, as it was accepted by the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center in Rancho Mirage.

“I started writing over 30 years ago, but never with the intention of getting to this point,’’ Darling said.

She has hopes that the book will get picked up by a publisher.

Copies are for sale in the Borders at the River in Rancho Mirage, the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells, the Esmeralda Resort and Spa in Indian Wells and the JW Marriot Desert Springs Resort and Spa in Palm Desert.

The book can also be found on her website.
