Shoppers Flock To New 99¢ Only Store

The chain's newest location opened today on Monterey Avenue south of Interstate 10.

Hundreds of shoppers turned out Thursday for the grand opening of the 99 Cent Only Store near Interstate 10 in Palm Desert.

Nearly 300 people lined up just before the 8 a.m. opening on Monterey Avenue, near Dick Kelly Drive, according to Laura Martin, an executive assistant for the national chain.

Shoppers told Patch they mainly showed up for the bargains.

"You can't beat the prices especially in this economy,'' said Lily Mark of Thousand Palms as she unloaded a cart full of groceries into her car.

The parking lots was bustling as shoppers went in and out of the store.

Elaine Robinson of Palm Desert said she went shopping with her neighbor.

"I spent $26 for all of this,'' Robinson said, motioning to an entire cart full of groceries and other items.

"My neighbor and I just love to shop,'' she said.
