Club Rush at La Quinta High School

La Quinta High School offers an array of extracurricular activities for its students. Here is a look at what LQ students are up to outside of the classroom.

Hip Hop Club- Do you find yourself beat-boxing during the most inappropriate moments? Are you able to drop a rhyme in a second’s time? Then Hip Hop Club is the place for you, where all positive aspects of the music genre will be brought to light in a fun, creative environment. “And we also have awesome rap battles,” added club president Adam Massini (12). Hip Hop Club meets Thursdays at lunch in room 410.

Japanime Club- Manga, cosplays, games, you name it, Japanime Club has it for any fan of the Japanese subculture phenomenon. Members are able to discuss their favorite anime while participating in role-playing events. Club president Jessica Plitt (12) encourages all Blackhawks who are interested in “exploring [Japanese] culture and making new friends.” This club meets at lunch in room 711 every Friday.

My Little Pony Club- Bronies of LQHS don’t need to travel all the way to Equestria to prove that Friendship is Magic. Fans of the popular animated television series are able to come together in an accepting community setting. According to club president Jose Valdez (12), “We aim to teach love and tolerance without judgment.” The My Little Pony Club meets Wednesdays at lunch in P-6.

Equestrian Club- If you aren’t into cartoon ponies and prefer the real thing, LQ’s Equestrian Club is a place where students can plan competitions and meet new horse-riding buddies from the high school, while also promoting good sportsmanship and teamwork. Equestrian Club meets Fridays in the girls’ locker room after school.

Dumbledore’s Army- Even though the final book has been written and the last movie tickets sold, students can still join the ranks of Dumbledore’s Army in support of their favorite wizard. This club features an array of Harry Potter-based activities, most notably the pretty intense quidditch matches (broomsticks for players are not supplied). Club meetings are Fridays at lunch in P-13.

World Religions Club- What started from a text message a year ago has now flourished into a club where students can discuss different faiths and religions from around the world without bias. Club leader Jesse Sanchez (11) describes World Religions Club as “a noble cause” and encourages anyone to join, regardless of their religious background. This club meets every other Friday at lunch in room 412.

Club La Flor- Kick up your heels, twirl that skirt (or sombreros, for you gentlemen), and have a fiesta of a time in Club La Flor. Blackhawks can learn a variety of Mexican folkloric dance routines in the Dance Room on Mondays and Fridays after school. All participants need to have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian in order to stay for practice.

GSA- Hey, hey, hey, it’s GSA! The Gay-Straight Alliance strives to raise awareness for the LGBT community and promote total acceptance and equality with guest speakers and student-led discussions. “GSA is a safe haven where students don’t have to be afraid to be themselves,” shared club co-president Hailey Carr (12). GSA meets every Thursday at lunch in room 504.

Actors Anonymous- Any of you quirky folks who re-enact scenes from The Rocky Horror Picture Show in your room, or break into a spontaneous monologue without an audience, fear not! There are others like you in Actors Anonymous—a club where students can participate in acting exercises and get into some theatre antics. Meetings are Fridays at lunch in the theatre black box.

Art Club- Renaissance men and women at LQ can find their inner muse in The Art Club where the goal is to inspire artistic thoughts into today’s youth. Trips to museums and other cultural destinations are taken throughout the year with the help of some organized student fundraisers. This club meets once a month at lunch in room 706.

Choir Club- Choir Club is geared toward those who are not able to take the Choir class offered at LQHS, so that those interested can still have a chance to perform in the different events with the Choir. Club meetings are to be held Wednesdays at lunch in room 302.

Environmental Club- If you are one of the children of the earth who like to reduce, reuse, and recycle, Environmental Club is the place for you to be. Club president David Castro (11) states, “[The Environmental Club] strives to raise environmental awareness and change the world one step at a time.” Club meetings are held every Wednesday at lunch in room 613.

Blackhawks for Christ- This club focuses on teaching Christian values through Bible scriptures, guest speakers, and good old fashioned camaraderie “Blackhawks for Christ allows students to band together for worship with friends and fellow believers,” expressed club president Garrett Eaglin (12). The club meets Tuesdays at lunch in the Dance Room.

Leo Club- Leo Club is a community service club that provides students with opportunities to help the community and earn volunteer hours. Community service events include La Quinta Cove clean up, Date Festival/Tamale Festival volunteering, Christmas Store donations, and Math Field Days support. Meetings are Wednesdays at lunch in room 506.

Friday Night Live- This club promotes the idea of having fun without the use of drugs and alcohol. Members of Friday Night Live become involved in the community and sponsor La Quinta High School’s annual Poet Laureate competition. Club meetings are on Fridays at lunch in room 405.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert- This club has a special volunteer opportunity designed specifically for high school students. By joining the “BIGS” team of volunteers, you will be matched with a child from age six to twelve and participate in a variety of activities with your Little Brother or Sister. To join the program, visit www.BBBSDesert.org.

Key Club- Members of Key Club meet to discuss projects that they can participate in for the benefit of the community. Every fall, the LQHS Key Club holds a membership drive and invites prospective members composed of the school’s “most outstanding and caring people.” If you think you fall into that category, the first mandatory meeting is on October 1 in room 407.

Students vs. Cancer- In this club, members focus on fundraising to assist in finding a cure for cancer, primarily participating in the Relay for Life. The Students vs. Cancer Club meets Tuesdays at lunch in room 513.

Do Something Club- Just as its name suggests, the Do Something Club sets out to play an active role in the community, as well as LQHS—namely, bringing in school supplies and volunteering in local organizations. Meeting dates have yet to be decided for this club.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes- Combining the Holy spirit with spirit of the game, members of Fellowship of Christian Athletes are able to bond over their religious beliefs and their athletic prowess. Club president Sabrina Monzon (12) encourages others to partake in this accepting and enriching club. Meeting days are Fridays at lunch in room 202.
