Get Out: Five ideas for your weekend

Enjoy poetry, pool time and powerful films this weekend.

Expand your mind this weekend with stirring poetry, thought-provoking films and real-life letters. Best of all, most of these events are free.

Our goal is to make the Get Out planner as reliable as possible, but keep in mind, some events change at the last minute. We advise calling ahead just in case.

Why Go: Come listen to University of California Santa Barbara poet Demi Anter as she reads and discusses her work. This monthly series is sponsored by local poetry society Valley Voices of the Muse and "Poets & Writers Magazine," with a grant from the James Irvine Foundation.

Why Go: Goodness knows we love but if you're craving a change of pace, families can swim free on this special night.

Why Go: Stick around after family swim and see a free movie under the stars. Grab dinner from Stuft Pizza or another nearby restaurant and have dinner and a movie on the big green lawn. Don't forget low-back chairs or blankets.

Why Go: You may have a tough time deciding between these two great movie events this Saturday! You can watch small farm documentary "Farmageddon" and help out a great cause - proceeds benefit our local farmers' markets; or, you can also check out this year's Sundance-Audience-Award-winner "Circumstance" and enjoy a discussion following the film.

When/Where: 3 p.m.-6 p.m. this Saturday at Azul Restaurant and Lounge, 369 N. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs

Why Go: Through a preserved legacy of real-life letters, co-authors Bill Edwards and James Considere have written "Gay Letters From Millicent to Maude," a book full of humorous letters written by "Millicent" in the early 1950s to his gay friend, "Maude." The campy correspondence is a fun read and a unique reflection on a nostalgic time.The authors will be reading from and signing their books during Happy Hour. Books will be available for purchase and are also available online.
