Children to Shop with Cops in Palm Desert on Saturday

Children in need this Christmas season will get to shop for gifts with law enforcement officers in Palm Desert on Saturday Dec. 14, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Here's more from a Wednesday statement:

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department's Palm Desert Station is announcing its 5th annual "Shop with a Cop" Program. On Saturday, December 14th, at 7 A.M., deputies and officers from the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station, Palm Desert Police, Indian Wells Police and Rancho Mirage Police will accompany children to Walmart in Palm Desert to participate in a Christmas shopping day.

School Resource Officers, Child Protective Services and deputies who participate in local Community Oriented Policing programs have selected several children and families who would benefit from some special attention. The children will interact with deputies at their own personal Safety Fair.  Deputies and officers will then assist as the children select toys to help make their Christmas wishes come true.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Walmart, the City of Palm Desert, the City of Indian Wells and the City of Rancho Mirage for making a difference in these children's lives. Without their generous donations this event would not be possible.

The event will be at the Walmart at 34500 Monterey Ave., said Palm Desert police Sgt. Mike Bianco.
