FIND FOOD BANK HAS FRESH OPTIONS

FIND food bank will be able to distribute fresh produce along with packaged goods this summer, thanks to the gift if a Mobile Pantry donated by Kraft Foods yesterday.

The Coachella Valley’s food bank, FIND, has just received a very special gift from Kraft Foods:  a new Kraft Foods Mobile Pantry truck that was unveiled yesterday at the Kraft Nabisco Championship Golf Tournament. FIND feeds around 80,000 valley residents who struggle to get enough food every month, and since fresh food spoils rapidly, most of the food they have been distributing has been boxed or canned.

The snazzy new Mobile Pantry, whose design was inspired by a beer delivery truck, has freezer and chiller compartments which are easy to unload quickly and display on supermarket-like stands for easy access. Local growers Ocean Mist and Prime Time will be providing most of the fresh produce right now. “A Mobile Pantry is critical to making sure that underserved communities have consistent access to healthy food,” said Lisa Houston, CEO at FIND Food Bank. “The Mobile Pantry connects our food insecure clients to fresh, local produce and nutritious proteins.”

Each load will include five to ten thousand pounds of groceries, focusing mainly on fresh produce and dairy products, plus non-perishable staples FIND has on hand. That’s about four days’ supplemental groceries for 100 to 200 families. When the truck arrives, host agency volunteers will set up tables and load them with the products. Clients walk around just as they would at a farmers’ market, selecting the goods they can use.
