Everyone Has One

What is a Personal Historian? I am in the memory business - helping to capture and shape other people's memories, through thoughtful reminiscences in legacy books, audios or videos.

We all have this in common - we are growing older. We awaken each morning to 86,400 seconds as a gift of life. Yesterday's seconds are gone and all that remains is a memory. That memory is one small part of your personal history. Yesterday's memories are unique to you and worth preserving. If you organize and compile those past seconds, past days, past memories, you have a life story. Everyone has one and no two are alike.

Stories told, recorded and transcribed form a legacy to pass on to generations beyond. The things you learn in life can be more important than the things you earned in life, and may be an inspiration to your future generations.

Wouldn't it be great if you could read your grandmother's life story, the things she loved in life, her trials and tribulations, her wisdoms, to know what was important to her, what made her tick? Her personal history is a bridge to your past. Wouldn't you cherish that as a great family treasure? Alex Haley says in Roots, "Without this (heritage), there is a vacuum, an emptiness, a most disquieting loneliness."

Writing your personal history is a tonic. It puts a new spring in your step and a twinkle in your eye. It gives a renewed sense of purpose. But...where to start?

You know those old shoeboxes in your garage that are full of family photos - the ones with childhood pictures, snapshots of mom and dad when they were younger, your kids, all the pets in the family? You were always going to do something with them. This is a good time to get those shoeboxes out and start going through the pictures.
