'Salton Stink' Goes Countywide

The eastern winds push the smell across the county.

A strong sulphuric odor first noticed throughout Riverside County on Sunday night hung in the air today, but authorities were at a loss to explain it.

"It's not something originating here in the city,'' Riverside Public
Utilities Chief Deputy Director Steve Badgett told City News Service.  "It hit

me when I went out to get my paper this morning 45 miles away.''

The rotten-egg odor wafted into Riverside around 10 p.m. Sunday and was
reported in Murrieta, Indio, Calimesa and other locations, as well.

Officials at the Eastern Municipal Water District, which services customers from Moreno Valley to Temecula, said the stench was not connected to
any of the district's operations. The EMWD directed further inquiries to the
South Coast Air Quality Management District, but calls to the agency were not
immediately returned.

Badgett said there were indications the source of the smell might be the
Salton Sea, but there was no confirmation.

"We had that storm system dragging everything up from the desert
yesterday, so who knows?'' he said.  "The weather pattern is high humidity and
no air movement above us.''

Open waterway to Sea of Cortez. Any other approach is futile. This is nothing but a cesspool @ this point and will remain so without fresh water and the ability to circulate. Salton Sea Authority is useless. Money is the answer and we ain't got it! P.S. The most polluted waterway in the U.S., "The New River", continues to add its pollutants. For those not familiar with this river, it flows across the Border from Mexico into the Salton Sea.

It's truly a disgisting stench! This putrid smell has been lingering around (to some degree or another) far more than the media reports. THE NOSE KNOWS! It was on TV news in Vegas that the odor was coming from "the salt of the sea" and affecting the Inland Empire. I had to chuckle.
Dining alfresco is not an option - backyard bbq or 5 star restaurant! I have empathy for those who have weddings, anniversaries, and etc. planned. What (ob)noxious memories will be made :-\ So, what's going to happen if this insulting aroma hangs around just long enough to 'welcome' our seasonal residents and tourists? Well then, I guess the newest fashion trend seen strolling along El Paseo will be crystal-bedazzled gas masks!

You';re welcome, Renee but I don't really expect thanks for my contributions to the classroom. IRead More wasn't going to stand by and see kids not have the basic things they needed to get through the class and most teachers are of the same mind :) Sadly, school budgets have never covered all the needs in classrooms.
