Injury Forces 2013 Finalist Del Potro Out of Indian Wells

World No. 7 Juan Martin del Potro pulled out of Indian Wells on Suday citing a nagging left wrist injury.

The Argentine finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in last year's BNP Paribas Open.

"[My wrist] is not in good condition to compete," del Potro said during a press conference. "We are trying to be smart. Sometimes it is better to lose a tournament than to lose a year."

Del Potro is among the fan favorites for his charism on the court. The 25-year-old retired due to the same injury during last week's ATP World Tour tournament in Dubai.

Del Potro was replaced in the draw by lucky loser James Ward, who will face Feliciano Lopez in the second round on Sunday afternoon.
