Alleged Drunken Driver Takes Out Sign

Betty Lucero, 34, is accused of driving drunk in a crash that downed a sign and destroyed some plants in a median on Fred Waring Drive in Indian Wells near Palm Desert.

An Indio woman was arrested early Friday on suspicion of driving drunk in a crash that wiped out a raised median in Indian Wells.

Betty Lucero, 34, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol when she rammed her 2008 Dodge Magnum sedan into the median on Fred Waring Drive at Elkhorn Trail in Indian Wells at 2:50 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, according to Sgt. Dan Devinny of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The Dodge continued eastbound in the median, coming to rest in the westbound lanes of Fred Waring Drive, downing a sign, scattering some boulders and destroying several plants, Devinny said.

Lucero, who was the only occupant in the car, was no injured, he said.

Two eastbound lanes and all three westbound lanes were closed for about one hour, according to Devinny.

Lucero was freed this morning on $2,500 bail from the Indio Jail, according to jail records.
