Update 5:10 p.m. The California Highway Patrol has released more details about a crash Friday morning on eastbound Interstate 10 near State Route 62, in which a 7-year-old boy sustained fatal injuries.

The crash occurred just after 7:10 a.m. Jan. 17 when a 2001 Chevrolet minivan towing an enclosed trailer was eastbound on the 10, approaching the transition road to the 62, CHP Officer Stephanie Hamilton said in a statement.

"There were a total of five occupants in the vehicle, a 66 year old male from Nevada, a 31 year old female from Anaheim, an 11 year old girl, a 9 year old boy and a 7 year old boy, all from Anaheim," Hamilton said.

For unknown reasons, the trailer being towed by the Chevrolet began moving side-to-side, and the trailer overturned, Hamilton said.

"The driver of the Chevrolet tried to maintain control of the minivan but it subsequently overturned," Hamilton said. "The Chevrolet and trailer continued in a northeasterly direction of E/B I-10, where it came
to rest partially blocking the #1 and #2 lanes."

The 7-year-old boy was partially ejected, and he was transported by ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, Hamilton said.

The 9-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl sustained minor injuries and they were transported to Desert Regional for treatment, Hamilton said. The two adult occupants did not sustain any injuries.

"The cause of this collision is still under investigation," Hamilton said. "The investigating officer related that it appeared the juvenile occupants were not wearing their seatbelts."

Anyone with more info was urged to call the Indio CHP Office at (760) 772-8900.

An overturned vehicle was reported at 7:12 a.m. Jan. 17, according to the CHP.

A bad looking wreck, I know it must have been a fatal when I came back the other way 90 minutes later and nothing had moved, thoughts for the poor family involved.

I was westbound just after it happened. Sounds like a dad, his daughter and 3 of her kids were either moving, or taking a trailer to Calexico to sell at the border. Looks like that too. Trailer had a crap load of crap in it. The 2 adults should be in jail....this is/was child endangerment......but they are messicans so when is the car wash?????
