CHP Offers Summer Driving Tips

As temperatures reach above the century mark, Palm Desert residents should make sure they are road-trip ready.

As temperatures rise in the Palm Desert area, motorists were encouraged to take special care to “summerize” their vehicles and carry extra water in case of an emergency.

“You should have a survival kit with you if you are going to be taking a trip in this heat,’’ said Officer Joe Zagorski, who is stationed at the California Highway Patrol’s Indio office, which serves the entire Coachella Valley.

Snacks, water, sunscreen, duct tape are all great items to start a kit, Zagorski said, adding that other items include maps, blankets, a good jack and basic extra vehicle parts.

Before hitting the road it is vital to have a car thoroughly checked, starting with tires, he said.

“If tires are in marginal condition, and the asphalt is getting up to 130 degrees, they are going to come apart,” Zagorski said.

Special attention should be given to these items:

Cooling System: Examine all belts and hoses for cracks or leaks. While driving, keep a close eye on the temperature gauge; shutting off the air conditioner if the engine heat creeps too high.

Electrical system: Check all lighting equipment, making sure it is in good operating condition. Take a close look at the battery. And don’t forget to check windshield wipers in case you get caught in a sudden storm.

The CHP also reminded motorists to let inform a friend or family member of their route before taking a long trip.

The law enforcement agency also warned residents to never leave children, the elderly or pets in a vehicle unattended, no matter how long.
