COD Postpones Firefighter Training Program

College cites lack of preparation time for potential firefighters as reason for delays

The following is a press release from College of the Desert

In June, COD received notice from the State Fire Marshall of its pending accreditation as a Regional Firefighter Academy. On June 25, 2012, College of the Desert (COD) issued a press release about the Basic Firefighter Academy ambitiously set to begin on August 28, 2012, at the new Roy Wilson Fire Training Center in Thousand Palms.

Prerequisites for the program include EMT certification and completion of the Certified Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Due to the short time frame between our Fire Academy accreditation and the start of classes the end of August 2012, few students were able to complete the extensive application process.

As a result, COD has elected to postpone the Basic Firefighter Academy until the Spring 2013 semester. This decision should allow greater access to interested students while providing additional time for students to complete necessary prerequisites.
