A College of the Desert football player who was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies in Palm Desert was identified today.
Frank Tanuvasa, 20, died early Thursday at a hospital about an hour after being shot.
Tanuvasa, who came to the desert from East High School, is from Anchorage, Ak.
He allegedly was seen fleeing a home in the 77800 Block of Michigan Drive about 12:35 a.m., according to sheriff's Deputy Angel Ramos.
A sheriff's deputy had gone to the area to investigate the report of a burglary, Ramos said.
An arriving deputy spotted a suspect running from the scene and chased him, but the suspect charged at him and struggled with the deputy, Ramos said.
The man was shot during the struggle, officials said.
Two other suspects were still at large, officials said.
He was pronounced dead about an hour later at 39000 Bob Hope Drive, in Rancho Mirage.
Deputies have been in response to drug activity on Michigan Drive.
