The 22-year-old man was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

By City News Service

A motorist suspected of drunken driving barreled off the Route 86 Expressway in Coachella, rolled over several times and landed in a vacant lot Sunday, a sheriff's sergeant said.

Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 12:15 a.m. to the expressway and Avenue 50. The driver, identified as Dennis Omar Lopez, 22, of Desert Hot Springs, had been heading south on the expressway in his Honda Accord when it left the roadway and flipped over, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Brian Bickman said.

The car came to a rest on its roof in a vacant lot west of the expressway. Lopez tried running away but was caught and eventually arrested for suspicion of drunken driving, Bickman said.

Lopez was also booked for misdemeanor hit and run driving and was released from custody today when he posted $2,500 bail, jail records showed.
