DUI Alleged in Power Pole Crash

A motorist who crashed into a power pole Tuesday morning in Coachella was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Deputies responded at 4:16 a.m. Dec. 3 to a reported solo vehicle traffic collision in the area of Van Buren St. and Avenue 48, Coachella police Sgt. Adam Elders said in a statement.

"Upon arrival, they located a single vehicle that had collided with a power pole with power lines down in the roadway," Elders said. "The investigation determined the driver of a Chevrolet HHR was driving northbound on Van Buren St when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a power pole just south of Avenue 48."

The driver, identified as Anay Guadalupe Lopez, 19, of Coachella sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Elders said.

"During the investigation, it was determined that Lopez showed signs of driving while impaired with alcohol and / or drugs," Elders said. "She was arrested and released due to her injuries. Charges of driving under the influence causing injury will be filed with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office."

Anyone with more info was urged to call the Coachella Police Department at (760) 863-8990.
