Fire Damages Home in Rancho Mirage

A fire broke out at a home Tuesday evening in Rancho Mirage and two dozen firefighters responded to contain it, according to Cal Fire.

The fire was reported at 7:21 p.m. Dec. 31 on Mission Palms West, south of Gerald Ford Drive and east of Da Vall Drive, Melody Hendrickson of Cal Fire-Riverside County said in a statement.

Five engine companies and one truck company responded, and initially there was "smoke showing from the exterior of the chimney of a single story, single family dwelling," Hendrickson said.

The fire was declared contained just before 8 p.m., Hendrickson said.

"Firefighters will be committed to the scene for approximately one to two hours for salvage and overhaul," Hendrickson said.

The incident commander "reported a loss of approximately $50,000 with an estimated save of $500,000," Hendrickson said in an update at 9:06 p.m.

No injuries were reported. Information about the cause was not immediately available.
