Gas Leak Leads to Hotel Evacuation

Three buildings at a Rancho Mirage hotel were evacuated Sunday when a natural gas line ruptured, but guests were allowed to return a short time later as the gas was cleared.

Dispatchers received a call at 1:05 p.m. about the damaged gas line at the Westin Mission Hills Resort Hotel on Dinah Shore Drive.

It was not known how many people were affected, but 64 occupied and vacant rooms were evacuated, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.

The guests were sent to the hotel's clubhouse as firefighters investigated what happened. Repairmen stopped the gas from leaking and worked toward fixing the line, Hagemann said.

All the guests were allowed to return to their rooms by 2:50 p.m. and the evacuation was lifted. No injuries were reported, Hagemann said.
