Gas Leak Repairs Prompt Closure on Monterey

Part of Monterey Avenue was scheduled to be closed until early Wednesday to accommodate crews fixing a natural gas leak in Palm Desert near Rancho Mirage, according to city and utility officials.

A 3-inch plastic gas main broke at Magnesia Falls Drive and Monterey Avenue about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday Jan. 14, and someone reported the tell-tale smell of a natural gas additive that makes the normally odorless gas detectable, Javier Mendoza of Southern California Gas Co. said.

Nearby residents were asked to stay inside, and nearby streets were closed were closed as a precaution, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

As of about 4 p.m., Mendoza said Gas Co. crews were working to fix the leak and investigating the cause.

Monterey Avenue was expected to be closed in both directions between Hovley Lane and Fred Waring Drive until early Wednesday, according to the city of Rancho Mirage.

Residents will be allowed in closed-off area with proper identification,
according to city officials.
