A homeless woman shot in the city of Indio was hospitalized in serious condition Monday and investigators were seeking clues as to the motive.
The attack was reported about 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Van Buren Street, near Doctor Carreon Boulevard, authorities said.
Arriving officers found the woman on a side street, with a single gunshot wound to her lower body, Indio police information officer Ben Guitron wrote in a news release.
The woman had apparently been attacked in a drive-by shooting.
A dark-colored, four-door SUV -- possibly a Chrysler PT Cruiser -- may have been involved in the attack, police said.
The vehicle was seen heading west on Doctor Carreon, from Van Buren, police said.
Anyone with information on the attack or with suspect information was asked to call investigators at 760-391-4057, or leave anonymous tips at the Coachella Valley Crime Stoppers at 760 341-STOP.
