Indio Man Suspected of DUI Crashed Into Traffic Island on Hwy. 111

A suspected drunken driver barreled his sedan across a traffic island on Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage and crashed early Saturday, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The driver, Timothy Mark Sasser, 23, of Indio, had been heading north on 111 when he allegedly attempted a right turn onto Country Club Drive. His sedan instead drove over an island, causing severe damage to it, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Ken Black said. The crash was reported at 1:26 a.m.

Sasser was the only person in the car, and was not hurt, Black said. But he flunked a field sobriety test and was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving.
