Man Accused of Drugged-Driving in Palm Tree Crash

Police accuse the man of being under the influence of drugs when he crashed into a palm tree in the traffic circle at Jefferson and Avenue 52.

A 22-year-old La Quinta man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly being under the influence of drugs in a fiery crash into a palm tree.

Isaac John Nicholson crashed a Mercury Sable at Jefferson Street and Avenue 52 in La Quinta about 2:20 a.m. and escaped uninjured, sheriff's Sgt. Robert Bishop said.

Arriving deputies found the car on fire on a landscaped island, he said.

Nicholson was going south on Jefferson when he struck the palm tree, "severing it at the base," Bishop said.

Nicholson was jailed on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and held in the county jail in Indio in lieu of $2,500 bail, Bishop said.
