Man Accused of DUI Hit-and-Run in Sunday Evening Crash

A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run in connection with a two-vehicle crash that resulted in injuries Sunday evening in Coachella, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The arrested man was identified Monday as Julio Ayon-Martinez, 58, of Coachella, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The crash was reported at 7:43 p.m. Oct. 6 on Grapefruit Boulevard at the intersection with Avenue 48, Sgt. Jeronimo Contreras of the Coachella Police Department said in a statement.

"The investigation revealed a gray Nissan truck was traveling northbound on Grapefruit Boulevard when it failed to slow to a stop before rear-ending a green Chevrolet Silverado," Contreras said.

The Nissan driver tried to drive away and his vehicle became mechanically disabled near the collision scene, Contreras said.

Ayon-Martinez was arrested for hit and run and suspicion of driving while impaired with alcohol, Contreras said. He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, then booked at Indio Jail.

Ayon-Martinez was released early Oct. 7 on $2,500 bail and he has a court date in December, according to inmate records.
