Man Accused of DUI in La Quinta Crash

Two vehicles crashed Sunday in La Quinta and a man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The crash was reported at 3:20 p.m. Sept. 15 on Jefferson Street south of Avenue 50, La Quinta police Sgt. Adam Elders said in a statement.

Responding officers found two vehicles that collided at the entrance to the Mountain View Country Club, Elders said.

Deputies determined the driver of a white Hyundai Genesis failed to stop and rear-ended the other vehicle. The occupants of both vehicles were uninjured, Elders said.

"During the investigation, it was determined that Lawrence Lyndon Smith, age 39 of Indio, showed signs of driving while impaired with alcohol and/or drugs," Elders said.

Elders was arrested and booked at the Indio Jail. He was cited and released later Sunday on $2,500 bail, according to inmate records.

Charges of driving under the influence will be filed with the District Attorney's Office, Elders said.

Anyone with any information about this incident is urged to contact the La Quinta Police Department at (760) 863-8990.
