VIDEO: Man Charged In Deadly Palm Desert Shooting, Arraignment Delayed

Arraignment for Juan Carlos Alcala was postponed until April 15 at the request of the defense.

A 42-year-old man was charged today in a Palm Desert shooting that resulted in the deaths of a father and his 2-year-old daughter.

Juan Carlos Alcala of Palm Desert faces first degree murder and attempted murder charges. He also faces a sentence enhancing allegation that he used a firearm and a special circumstance allegation that he committed multiple murders.

If convicted of the special circumstance allegation, he could face the death penalty. But prosecutors will make a decision on whether to pursue capital punishment within the next three months, according to Supervising Deputy District Attorney Otis Sterling.

Alcala who wore a red jump suit, appeared in court today for arraignment. But the hearing was delayed until April 15 at the request of Deputy Public Defender Laura Garcia.

His attorney said the case will be handed over to the Capital Defense Team in Riverside.

The prosecutor asked Riverside County Superior Court Judge John M. Davis to keep Alcala in custody without bail, which was granted.

Alcala was arrested Friday, April 8 shortly after he surrendered himself into custody at the Hovely Gardens condominiums on Avenue 42, east of Cook Street in Palm Desert.

He is accused of killing 24-year-old Felipe Lozano and his 2-year-old daughter, Doria Lozano-Reynoso. Alcala also allegedly opened fire on the child's grandmother, Afra Lozano, 43, who was struck twice in the leg and survived, according to Corp. Courtney Donowho of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Doria, or "Zoe," died later that day at Loma Linda University Medical Center. She suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and one to her leg, the corporal said.

Her father was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcala was being held without bail at the Indio Jail.
