Man in Wheelchair Dies in Indio Crash

An investigation was underway Wednesday into a crash that took the life of a 67-year-old wheelchair-bound man in Indio.

The crash happened around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Doctor Carreon Boulevard and Monroe Street, according to a statement from the Indio Police Department.

The victim, an Indio resident whose name was withheld pending family notification, was taken to JFK Memorial Hospital, where he died 40 minutes after the crash, according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office.

The driver of the SUV that struck the victim stopped and cooperated with investigators. He was not believed to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.
