More Than 20 People Rescued from Broken Ferris Wheel in Palm Desert

Firefighters say a total of 22 people had to perform "... an aerial technical rescue" when the ride malfunctioned.

A ride on a Ferris wheel took a wrong turn when a drive cable snapped and left 22 people hanging in their cars in Palm Desert, a spokeswoman said Saturday.

Firefighters were dispatched at 9:35 p.m. Friday to the Marriott Desert Springs resort, where a private event was taking place.

The ride's operators called 911 when the ride could not be moved manually, Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson said.

Firefighters used a ladder truck to safely remove all 22 patrons from their cars. No injuries were reported, Hendrickson said.  By 1:45 a.m., everyone was down from the ride.
