New Chief Pathologist: First Woman to Top County Coroner's Bureau

The Riverside County Coroner's Bureau, a branch of the Sheriff's Department, has a new chief pathologist and she is the first woman to lead to the bureau since it was established when the county incorporated in 1893.

Dr. Jennifer Park was promoted to Chief Forensic Pathologist by Sheriff Stan Sniff on Tuesday Nov. 19, 2013.

The Coroner's Office was established in May 1893, McConnell said. On Jan. 4, 1999, the Coroner's Office consolidated with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Here's more info from the Sheriff's Department:

Park grew up in Washington State. After graduating high school she attended the University of Washington in Seattle for her Bachelors of Science degree. Medicine had always been her passion and career goal, so after her undergraduate education, she moved to southern California to attend medical school at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Ca.

She completed a four year Pathology Residency program at the University of Hawaii. During her residency training, she became fascinated with Forensic Pathology and death investigation.

After completing her post graduate training, she moved to Miami, Florida to complete a one-year fellowship year in Forensic Pathology. Miami has one of the premier programs in Forensics. She remained in south Florida for seven years as a staff forensic pathologist for the Miami Dade Medical Examiner Department. During the course of her service in Miami, she was the attending doctor over 16 fellow doctors and oversaw training in addition to keeping up with a very busy workload.

Park joined the the Riverside County Sheriff's Department in July 2012.
