One Dozen Arrested at Memorial Weekend DUI Checkpoint in La Quinta

Of those arrested, five of them were nabbed on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

A dozen people were arrested at a weekend DUI/driver's license checkpoint in La Quinta, with five of those suspected of driving under the influence, according to police reports.

The checkpoint was held Saturday night into the early morning hours Sunday, on Southbound Washington Street at Avenue 48, according to sheriff's Corporal Don Olson.

A total of 1,212 vehicles passed through the operation, and 995 of them were screened, according to Olson.  Of those-- 27 were referred to a secondary inspection point.

Officers on scene arrested five drivers on suspicion of DUI, and another six for driving without a valid license, according to the corporal.  A twelfth person was arrested for an outstanding warrant.

Four other people were ticketed for "other hazardous violations," he said.

"La Quinta PD will be conducting more DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint in the near future in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways," Olson said.

Funding for the operation was provided via state and federal grants.
