One man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and six other people were cited for license infractions during a checkpoint operation Saturday night and early Sunday in Coachella, sheriff's sergeant said.

Deputies with the Coachella Police Department Traffic Unit staged the DUI/Driver's License checkpoint at Grapefruit Boulevard and Ed Mitchell Drive from 7 p.m. Dec. 28 to 2 a.m. Dec. 29, sheriff's Sgt. Roberto Castro said in a statement.

Arrested for driving under the influence was Miguel Angel Garcia, 64, of Indio. An estimated 650 vehicles were screened during the checkpoint, Castro said.

In addition, nine people were cited for license infractions during a checkpoint from 7 p.m. Dec. 27 to 2 a.m. Dec. 28 at Harrison Street and Avenue 52, Castro said. An estimated 1,355 vehicles were screened.

Funding for Coachella checkpoint operations comes in part from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

This is OUTRAGEOUS: 650 vehicles [meaning possibly 2000 individuals] had their movements halted, meaning legally they were seized, for one arrest - who could doubtlessly get out of the DUI charges if he hires a competent attorney. Of course, the real reason for these things is to show the populace who is in charge around here - who can command halt, who can grill people, who can smell people's breath, who can say go or stay, who's The Man. And on that tyrannical score, this was a great success! Oh, My God - when sheep we have become. These checkpoints are quite like Herod's "public safety" plan [that's how he labeled it too] to find the baby Jesus - kill all the babies 0-2 years old! They did, but one baby slipped out. This modern day Herodism must stop, lest we lose the meaning of the Revolution and usher back in our own King George.

So, 18 copes making, with benefits, $55.00 per hour bust one DUI? Oh yeah, I feel safer now.
