One DUI Arrest, 15 Cited During Two Checkpoints in Coachella

One man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and six other people were cited for license infractions during a checkpoint operation Saturday night and early Sunday in Coachella, sheriff's sergeant said.

Deputies with the Coachella Police Department Traffic Unit staged the DUI/Driver's License checkpoint at Grapefruit Boulevard and Ed Mitchell Drive from 7 p.m. Dec. 28 to 2 a.m. Dec. 29, sheriff's Sgt. Roberto Castro said in a statement.

Arrested for driving under the influence was Miguel Angel Garcia, 64, of Indio. An estimated 650 vehicles were screened during the checkpoint, Castro said.

In addition, nine people were cited for license infractions during a checkpoint from 7 p.m. Dec. 27 to 2 a.m. Dec. 28 at Harrison Street and Avenue 52, Castro said. An estimated 1,355 vehicles were screened.

Funding for Coachella checkpoint operations comes in part from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
