One Injured, One Arrested in Felony DUI Crash in Coachella

One driver was injured in a head-on crash and another driver was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI late Thursday in Coachella, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The crash was reported at 9:55 p.m. Sept. 12 on Avenue 54 west of Tyler Street, Sgt.  J. J. Gaw, of the sheriff's Thermal Station said in a statement.

Deputies responded and determined from witness and driver statements the driver who caused the collision was eastbound on Avenue 54, trying to pass a slower-moving vehicle, Gaw said.

"As she did so, she struck an oncoming, westbound vehicle head-on," Gaw said. "The driver of the other vehicle sustained visible neck injuries and complained of pain throughout her entire body."

The injured driver was a female Hispanic juvenile, and she was transported to a hospital for treatment in stable condition, Gaw said.

The driver causing the collision, identified as Olivia Bray, 26, was not injured, Gaw said.

"Further investigation revealed that Bray was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision," Gaw said. "Bray was arrested for felony driving under the influence causing injury. Bray  was booked at the Riverside County jail in Indio."

Avenue 54 was closed for about one hour while the roadway was cleared. An update on the injured driver was not available Friday.
