One person was killed and another was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries resulting from a rollover crash Tuesday on Interstate 10 near Chiriaco Summit.
The crash was reported around 12:20 p.m. on eastbound I-10 east of Hayfield Road. The two victims, a male and female, were eastbound in a 1999 Ford Escort which veered off the road, struck the dirt shoulder and flipped over.
The female occupant died at the scene, and her companion was airlifted to JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio, California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Radford said.

The fatally injured person's name was withheld until her family could be notified.
Radford said it was unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash, which was under investigation.
